Chapter 39

“It’s a good thing that you called me,” Tran counseled his latest wayward communist. “Perhaps you can be the one to aid in his capture. It would certainly raise your standing.”

The tired old man felt like laughing in his face.

“He kept complaining about his room,” he related the story. “Saying it smelled. I put him in here instead.”

He slipped the devout communist the room key, still not realizing its mate remained unaccounted for.

“Do you think he is still up there?” The young man’s palms were damp; his pulse racing. Theory was about to become practice.

“I have not seen him come down since,” the old man answered truthfully.

Pistol drawn, Tran headed upstairs, eager at the prospect of becoming a comrade hero his first time out. He made his way down the hall, counting down the numbers until he stood outside the door. Should he knock? Should he kick the door in like the American police shows? He pressed his ear to the door and heard nothing. As quietly as he could, he slid the key into the lock and turned. The door opened to yet another empty room. He stepped in and looked around, holstering his Makarov. Not only was the room empty, but it appeared to never have been occupied. No luggage or possessions of any kind. Not even a magazine. Maybe he would return. Maybe he had a dozen just like it. All that was required was money, obviously. Money and weak people like the men in the lobbies. Both of them. How could they call themselves good communists and still do things like this? He would present both names for reeducation.

He locked the door on his way out and proceeded on a reverse course to the lobby. His plan was to go back next door to see if the first desk clerk knew anything about his guest setting up shop next door.
